Hospital Expedite Letters:

NHS hospitals continue to experience significant demand, and many patients are facing longer waits for outpatient appointments, investigations, treatments, and operations.

Patients are sometimes advised by hospital staff to ask their GP for an "expedite letter" to support a request for earlier treatment. Unfortunately, this is often unhelpful, as your GP is unable to influence hospital waiting lists or prioritisation decisions. Only the hospital team responsible for your care can assess your clinical needs alongside those of other patients waiting for the same service.

If your symptoms have changed or worsened while you are waiting for an appointment, treatment, or procedure, it is important that the hospital is made aware. In many cases, the most effective approach is to contact the hospital directly and explain how your condition has changed.

To help with this process, you may wish to use one of the template letters below.

Template Letter – First Specialist Appointment

Dear Consultant,

I am currently awaiting an appointment regarding [insert reason for referral] following a referral from my GP at Collingham Church View Surgery.

Since my referral was made, my condition has changed in the following way:

[Briefly describe any new symptoms, worsening symptoms, or impact on your daily life.]

I would be grateful if you could:

  • Review my referral and hospital records in light of this information to determine whether my appointment or treatment should be prioritised;
  • Inform me directly of the outcome of your review and any anticipated timescales for further care; and
  • Place this correspondence and your decision within my medical record.

Template Letter – Follow-Up Appointment, Treatment, or Procedure

Dear Consultant,

I am currently under your care for [insert your condition or reason for treatment].

I am awaiting a follow-up appointment, treatment, or procedure and would like to inform you of the following change in my condition since our last contact:

[Briefly describe any new symptoms, worsening symptoms, or impact on your daily life.]

I would be grateful if you could:

  • Review my hospital records in light of this updated information to determine whether my care should be prioritised or expedited;
  • Contact me directly to advise me of the outcome of your review and the anticipated waiting time for further care; and
  • Add this correspondence and your decision to my medical record.
